The weekend on the French-German border flew away. Only the time to wish to Annik a wonderful rebirth in her new city, with her new job and her new life. A funny encounter with Gültekin and Franz, 2 friends I met in Istanbul who live around there, members of the band Divan, here's their delightful video: Sofra.
I am now back with Tunç and soon we move to the house of his parents, in Stadtallendorf. Then tomorrow we go to Berlin for the final stage of the German tour.
This morning in Frankfurt, I bought an Italian newspaper, the first I read on paper since last February, and was shocked. The news run very well on the internet, I have no problem to follow the Italian news, but some layout on the paper also helps to understand many things.
The first news is shocking. On 16 April, 145 migrants, after the craft with which they had left from Libya was sunk, they are taken safely in the channel of Sicily by a boat flying the flags of Turkey, the Pinar. Several die, the bodies of some of them are recovered and lying on the deck. The Pinar trying to dock, Malta or Sicily it does not matter, the conditions of 145 migrants are serious, among them several women pregnant. Malta and Italy fight, do not want to grant permission to Pinar do dock, which must wait 4 days at sea before the Italian authorities grant permission. Meanwhile, as reports the journalist, the recovered bodies of died migrants remained for 4 days on the deck and are undergoing putrefaction, among them that of a young Nigerian woman pregnant. What the world waits before calling with an appropriate and convenient name what is happening in the sea between Libya and Italy? What the world waits before calling with an appropriate name the practices of Italian politicians (the great majority, from right and left)? Racism? Fascism? Perhaps it is simplistic terms. Maybe we should find some more relevant word. The news however is in the first pages of the newspaper (can’t be different!).
Then another news on page 16, which was also among the first news in recent days, and then suddenly slipped at the bottom. On 11 April in the Gulf of Aden in front of Somalia, an Italian ship, the Buccaneer, is blocked by the pirates. The Italian authorities come, arise, threaten. Then there’s a hidden truth that lights: it seems that pirates have blocked the ship only because the ship on board brings toxic waste that was to be discharged illegally in Somalia. The news suddenly slips on page 16.
The Pinar with 145 exhausted migrants on board (and some rotting corpses, including that of a pregnant woman) is blocked by the Italian authorities off the coast of Sicily for 4 days. The Buccaneer is blocked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden because it is carrying toxic waste to be discharged illegally. In the first case, the Italian authorities even complain, in the second arise. Better pirates than criminals!!!
Today I am ashamed to be Italian.
